Validation workshop :Strategic Assesment of Aquaculture Potential. (Haiti)
The implementation of this project involved a collaborative process that included a national survey to assess current and potential aquaculture activities and a validation workshop to review the strategic assessment of aquaculture potential and development.
A strategic assessment of the potential for farming fish in Haiti has been completed. The report discusses the various options offered by aquaculture to contribute to food security and livelihood development in Haiti.
The study was completed by a team of three experts with specialist knowledge in aquaculture, socio-economics and GIS/mapping. They supported the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture to complete a strategic assessment of aquaculture potential in Haiti, including an inventory of existing aquaculture activities and an institutional analysis. The final analytical report included spatial analysis with potential zoning for aquaculture development and practical steps to ensure the study turns into the development of a successful industry.
A stakeholder feedback workshop was held on 31st August, at the Montana hotel, where the team validated their analysis and discuss recommendations with the various stakeholders.
This is an important initiative as the sector has the potential to create and enhance rural livelihoods and income-earning opportunities, whilst improving national food security and reducing Haiti’s reliance on fish imports.
